Hate those high summer electric bills? Who doesn’t? Usually, the culprit for these big summer bills is the AC. Central air conditioning systems can cause energy bills to skyrocket. But, if you have a swimming pool in your backyard, it is probably also contributing to why that bill looks so big. Swimming pools use electricity to operate the pool’s pump and pumping water takes a lot of energy. The pump is designed to keep the pool water from becoming stagnant. As a swimmer you know how much of your own physical energy is expended when you swim the length of your pool. In the same way, moving water with a pump, because of the water’s weight and resistance, will require a lot of electrical energy. To make matters worse, most swimming pools are equipped with greatly oversized pumps. A pool with a 1.5 horsepower pump will pump twice the water that a pool with a .5 horsepower pump might. A 1.5 HP pump running 10 hours will add 15 kilo-watt hours to your bill. Now do that for 30 days a month and it gets pricey. By replacing an old inefficient single-speed pumping system with a two-speed pump you can cut your power usage in half.
There are other things you can do to make your swimming pool more energy efficient. For instance, running your pool sweeper at night during off-peak hours will help save you money on your electric bill.
Seeking more efficient ways to use energy can cut your electric bill down to size. Having your own pool to splash in will make the summer better all around.
