Tis the season to be jolly. But higher electricity bills can take the “ho, ho, ho” out of the holidays. Here are a few helpful tips on how to make the season feel festive and still control energy costs:

1. Brighten the holiday with LED lights. Instead of stringing up the old Christmas lights, make the switch this year to LED lights. LEDs will triple the life of traditional incandescent bulbs. Plus, they can drop your power load by as much as 80%. LED lights cost a little more on the front end, but they save you on your electric bills for years to come.
2. Lose the inflatable Santa. Your inflatable Santas and Rudolphs can break the bank. Most inflatable yard art requires an electric fan running day and night. For example, a 7-foot St. Nick or 10-foot Nativity scene can cost you an $60 a month. Yikes!
3. Deck the halls with boughs of holly. Not all holiday decorations have to twinkle and spin. There are plenty of festive touches that don’t require batteries or an electrical outlet. Hang some mistletoe. Scatter boughs of holly and juniper on tables and mantles. And place a wreath on the front door. Pretty, huh?
4. Smells and bells. The season should be full of nostalgic aromas, the jingle of bells and spontaneous carol singing. Heat up some apple cider, add some cloves and cinnamon sticks. Put up a pine tree and hang some jingle bells on the door knobs. Cut into a fruit cake. um. Not everything needs to be plugged in.
