Winter is almost here and heating bills are on the rise. So here are a few helpful tips on making your home more energy efficient and your bills not so high:
Insulate your attic. One of the easiest ways to save money is by making sure there is at least 12 inches of insulation in your attic. The rule of thumb is that if you can see your ceiling joists, you don’t have enough insulation.
Wrap your hot water heater. When the temperatures drop, it’s more important than ever to invest in a water heater blanket and wrap your water heater so it doesn’t have to work so hard.
Open the blinds in sunny rooms. Keep the blinds open on the rooms that get a lot of sun, every little bit of extra heat can help keep those energy bills down.
Consider a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats can help you save a ton of money. You can set them to go off when you are at work and turn on right before you get home. They are simple to install and often you break even on the cost within the first year.
Lower the temperature setting on your thermostat. A lower temperature means the system is running less, so try lowering the temperature a degree at a time. If you get cold, throw on a sweater.
Replace your air filter. During the winter, when the system runs more often, it’s good to replace your filter monthly so that you don’t have a dirty air filter ruining the efficiency of your heating system.
Caulk doors and windows. A little caulk can go a long way. It keeps the cold air outside and the heated air inside.
Flip the switch on your ceiling fan. This one is really easy, just flip the rotation direction on your ceiling fans. As hot air rises in the winter, you want the fan to blow upward and slowly. This circulates the hot air back down into the room.
