When the forecast calls for severe weather that might cut your power, you can be ready to ride out the storm and keep your home and property safe with these tips.

Have your cell phone and laptop fully charged so you can use them in a power outage, and backup computer files for protection, in case a power surge might cause damage. Speaking of power surges, unplug any sensitive electronics, such as TVs, video game consoles or computers to prevent the risk of damage from a nearby lightning strike.

“Everybody out of the pool!” Turn off all swimming pool pumps and filters to protect them from electrical damage. If flooding is expected, wrap the equipment in waterproof material to protect it.
The day before the storm, go for “the big chill” and turn your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings. This will help keep food fresh in the event of a power outage. If you can reach them safely, remove any satellite dishes or antennas, but look out for power lines nearby before you attempt it.

Get out your battery-operated emergency equipment to make sure everything is working, and see if you have extra batteries in the proper sizes for the devices that you use. If you don’t have these, you can put together a storm safety kit with flashlights, a battery-operated radio, extra batteries, first aid supplies, blankets, a few bottles of water, and snacks like granola bars.

If someone in your home depends on continuously operating electric-powered medical equipment, make arrangements for backup power. If that’s not possible, you may want to relocate outside of the storm area.
